Koufonissi

A small group of two islets, east of Naxos and west of Amorgos, Pano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi, separated by a narrow 200 m. wide strait.

Kato Koufonissi (the long thin one) is virtually uninhabited leaving most of the tourism centred on Pano Koufonissi

They were named Koufonisia [meaning 'Hollow islands'] because of the existance of  huge caves which gave the impression, to pirates who viewed them from a distance, that the islands were hollow!
